This month our ballet students are learning about Twyla Tharp! Twyla is an extremely important American choreographer, who has choreographed more than 130 dances, and that does not include her work for Broadway, film and television. She started dancing at the age of four, in all genres in dance. She fell in love with dance once again in college and studied at the American Ballet Theater school. Her choreography is dynamic, unpredictable and musically intelligent, and combines many different genres of dance.
Twyla Tharp and her dancers have collaborated with major ballet companies including Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theater. In 1979 she choreographed the film version of the musical “Hair”, and in 1980 choreographed a stage production of the musical “Singin' in the Rain”. In 2002 she choreographed an original dance musical titled “Movin' Out” to the music of Billy Joel. This February is Twyla's world premiere of “Princess and the Goblin”, based on the story by George MacDonald, right in our back yard!
That's right! Atlanta Ballet and Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet are performing this family friendly ballet at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center from February 10-19. The ballet is an evening length production featuring students from the Atlanta Ballet Center for Dance Education. We will not be missing out on this production and neither should you!
Get your tickets through Atlanta Ballet's website and join us as we head down to see a Twyla Tharp masterpiece!
